Open Source Education: Professors’ Open Source Camp in Singapore

Professors' Open Source Summer Experience (POSSE), a training bootcamp targeted for faculty members of technical universities in Asia is being organized from November 9-13, 2009 at Nanyang Polytechnic in Singapore. Faculty members from Singapore, Malaysia, China, India are expected to participate.

The first camp was held in Raleigh, North Carolina earlier this year in July.

The goals for the camp are ambitious. A cross-section of topics focusing on development tools and techniques aims to recruit new contributors to open source projects by providing a hands-on experience to participants using Fedora as project examples.

The 5-day camp starts with an overview of open source, then dives into communication tools such as IRC, wikis and blogs to teach participants how to be effective contributors. Development topics include compiling source code, using build tools, setting up a build environment and packaging with RPM.

Testing and bug fixing are easy routes for users to become contributors. Participants walk-through the process of filing bug reports with Bugzilla as well as editing, testing and creating bug patches.

The camp is being organized by Harish Pillay, Jasmine Ee, and Alan Ho from Red Hat Singapore. Mel Chua and Greg DeKoenigsberg are mentors for the program. You can find out more about POSSE Singapore at its website.

I think this program is an excellent start in the right direction by Red Hat and its Asia Pacific (APAC) team to facilitate open source education. Engaging faculty from engineering universities is key to increasing contributions as well as growing the talent pool of engineers in emerging markets to support industry demand.

Engaging Developers with Open Source Projects (OSS Watch Workshop)

Why should software developers who create local customisations of open-source software take the further step of submitting their changes back to the main project? While it takes more effort initially, having these changes integrated in the project becomes efficient in the long run: local modifications need not be re-applied at every upgrade, and the project takes over their maintenance. By building up a record of useful contributions, one can gain influence in shaping the project's future.

The OSS Watch workshop will present this argument in greater detail, explaining how developers engaged in customisations of open-source software should make these contributions. Presentations of projects that benefited from this type of engagement of their developers with open-source software will be presented by the people directly involved in these processes.

The event is free, and open to all.

Programme (more detail will be added as it becomes available)

Open Source Digital Signage System

Below is list Open Source Digital Signage. Digital signage is used for many different purposes and there is no definitive list. However, below are some of the most common applications of digital signage:
  1. Public information – news, weather and local (location specific) information, such as fire exits and traveler information
  2. Internal information - corporate messages, health & safety, news, etc.
  3. Advertising – either related to the location the signage is in or just using the audience reach of the screens for general advertising
  4. Brand building – in-store digital signage to promote the brand and build a brand identity
  5. Influencing customer behavior – directing customers to different areas, increasing the dwell time on the store premises
  6. Enhancing customer experience – applications include the reduction of perceived wait time in restaurant waiting areas, bank queues, etc., as well as recipe demonstrations in food stores
  7. Enhancing the environment – with interactive screens (in the floor for example) or with dynamic wayfinding
